It was a late thursday night. An aunt of mine was good friends with the singer and he had a gig in a distant city that I will not name. Hoping to relax before he heads back to the United States, my aunt asked us if we would be willing to meet him. Why not? I used to listen to his music when I was 2 yrs. I knew one of his popular songs by heart.

Just so we’re clear, this guy is a NOBODY in North American standards. If Rihanna pranced around in my city, people would know who she is but this guy, nobody knows him and as of today, NOBODY SHOULD EFFING KNOW HIM!

I was at a conference that evening and I cut my dinner short with amazing people to meet this guy. I’m talking about ambassadors who have lived in Venezuela and had seen the pains and ills of the country with their own eyes. I’m talking about one guest who came from Italy and could wittily explain the troubles in Italian politics. I’m talking about having a very deep discussion about the Kimberly Process and its subsequent (and predictable) failure. Ya, I left that to meet this guy and if I could turn back the clock, I would have eaten my dessert and mingled.

First off, he was late. The supposed King of (a type of genre of music found in my country) arrived at 10 pm on a thursday night. He didn’t show up by himself; he was surround by a tiny self-important entourage. You can blame his entourage for his tardiness but the fashionably late excuse could only work with the likes of Madonna. Again, this guy is a NOBODY.

He was greeted by fans which was mostly composed of my family. We were barely 15-some-people which is quite generous for a guy of his “stature.” There was food everywhere.

He entered the room and barely spoke to anyone except people within his entourage. It was a solid 45 minutes of dead silence with useless small talks here and there. If you ask me, I think people were praising him a bit too much. It was so awkward, I “excused” myself to watch the shrimps roast in the oven. Not a great first impression indeed. “Coincidentally” an uncle of mine followed me to the kitchen as well as we shared a short riveting conversation on shrimps. No lie!

After looking at these suckers sizzle, my mom ran into the kitchen to tell us that the “artist” had opened his mouth. He was talking politics. Ah great! Of course, let’s talk about our corrupt country (which is not the one I’m living in but it is conveniently located in the black continent). How do we fix our mess oh sage one? Well apparently, he claims that the (adjective of the name of the country my parents are from) diaspora isn’t organized enough and that’s the reason why our country is falling behind. Forget that there’s corruption in the country. Forget that corruption is taught at a young age. Forget that unlike many other African country, there isn’t an accessible oil tap. Forget that the country is ravaged by malaria and all the other bad stuff. No, the people who left the country aren’t organized and they’re the ones to blame for the ills of the country. I get the brain-drain argument but if you’re not creating an environment to keep your nationals on your soil, you’re as much to blame. Besides, it’s not like all Europeans stay in Europe.

Before I get on my rant let me just say this: if you have no decent arguments or facts to back anything that comes out of your mouth, you’re a bloody idiot! Suffices to say that this “artist” fit the bill.

When pressed to justify his statement, he argues: “I’ve seen other communities organize themselves because I’ve travelled all over the world.” Ok, how genius? He doesn’t say. Given his “notoriety” in my parents’ country, instead of hiding behind his “home” in L.A, why HASN’T HE attempted to forge some sort of organization? Every organization has a leader. He says: “We (adjective of the name of the country my parents are from) talk politics and then just go home. If I were to call them again to talk politics, they wouldn’t show up.” Really? That’s the best you can do? Have you ever gone to a baby shower? Try to defend your stance on  bombing the hell out of Iraq and see where that takes you. I’ll give you a preview: “Well…..Saddam was bad and stuff….right?!” FYI, I don’t condone bombing Iraq. It’s not just (adjective of the name of the country my parents are from)! I know only but a handful of people who give two hoots about Canadian politics and that’s because they work in a politically-driven environment.

His final argument left me stunned. According to him, the first president of my parents’ country was the worst. Why was he the worst president? He says: “This president failed to bring TV sets to our country till the 1980s.” Done! Your right, because we all totally wanted to watch those crappy videos of yours.

The party ended at 2:30 am. Most of us had to work. My mother couldn’t wait to get a picture with him. When she asked me if I wanted to have a picture with him, I turned around, look at him and then looked at her and said “hell no.” The next day, I deleted his songs off my iPod. It’s like that!

This isn’t the first time an artist has completely shut me off. Case and point: M.I.A.

Who wore what

Surprisingly, Rihanna actually wore some clothes. I was worried she would have her cooch in the air but she dress up very nicely for the event unlike her counterparts (i.e Gaga and Nicki Minaj). I was also worried about her switch to blonde, but the whole ensemble proved to be a hit.

Impressive isn’t it? Ok, well let me show you the duds.

I don’t even know what the hell Fergie was wearing but it was atrocious. I really felt like the dress was going to burn my retina.

Why did you bother wearing clothes Fergie? You were better off naked…I can see your bra and panties!  Am I the only one who can’t stare at her dress too long? Other shocker, Nicki Minaj. I’ll let the picture do the talking.

Yup, that’s your holy highness right there. I’ll come back to all of that later.

Bye Whitney

The evenings started with a performance from an incomprehensible Bruce Springsteen–I’m sorry, I didn’t understand a word that was coming out of his mouth–and then came out a mature LL Cool J. It was a given that the Grammys had to acknowledge the death of Whitney Houston. Given that they had but a few hours to even prepare something respectful to the diva of pop, the end product turned out to be fantastic. The event started out with a prayer for Whitney. Tres classy!

Halfway through the show, after they commemorated the lives of those who left before Whitney (which includes Amy Winehouse…but no mention of Etta James or Don Cornelius), Jennifer Hudson stepped out and sang “I will always love you” and it was BEAUTIFUL. I kind of got teary-eyed thinking that we actually lost Whitney Houston too soon. Hudson didn’t hit all the notes since she was choking-up but the whole thing was marvellous.

Performances

Where do I begin. The performances were not that great this year. No disrespect but aside from Adele, some were memorable but very few were great.

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt performed a tribute to Etta James which was good. I feel like Raitt out-performed Keys. I was kind of expecting a tribute to Amy Winehouse but there wasn’t one. Don Cornelius got a half-ass tribute through a bizarre segway to Guetta and Chris Brown. It wasn’t really well done at all. They were better off adding him to the “in memorium”…which they didn’t.

Chris Brown performance was OK. It wasn’t phenomenal. He basically just dance around on some blocks with veiled men. Ya, it sounds just as boring as I described it. The remix to “Beautiful People” was amazing…and that’s the music…that he didn’t even sing too. His performance outside the Staple Center was a lot better, a lot more energetic and we definitely saw the ol’ Chris back in action. The Twitterverse however, doesn’t want to forgive Brown for his past mistake. If only they could be this mean to….oooohhh, let’s see Charlie Sheen. He just pistol-whipped Kelly Preston and he still has a “career”. Same thing for Mickey Rourke. I’m just saying.

Kelly Clarkson and some country guy…I’m not even going to bother looking up his name because that performance was B-O-R-I-N-G. The performance was so boring, one microphone croaked.

Rihanna sang…live! Ya! I don’t think I need to elaborate further. Her dance skills have improved. She performed “We found love” and joined Chris Martin in a duet for their song “Princess of China” which was just as terrible as Clarkson and No Name performance. Rihanna couldn’t hit her notes since she was exhausted from all the dancing and Chris Martin couldn’t hit his notes at all. Coldplay performed “Paradise” right after and Chris’ voice was just as bad. I love Coldplay but Chris Martin may consider laying off the falsettos. His voice was really not up to par.

The highlight of the Coldplay performance was in the audience. Everyone had a glowstick with different colours and it was awesome.

Foo Fighters performed and each performance was just as annoying as Coldplay’s. They had the audacity to talk about their music being genuine since they “made their CD in Grohl’s garage” which begs the question: don’t you have money to go in a studio. Grohl went on this useless rant about heart, music and stuff.

“This is a great honour, because this record was a special record for our band. Rather than go to the best studio in the world down the street in Hollywood and rather than use all of the fanciest computers that money can buy, we made this one in my garage with some microphones and a tape machine…

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do.

“It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Grohl rant was a jab at the Coldplays of the world but he couldn’t possibly be bothered by the idea of jamming next to Deadmau5 who doesn’t sing and isn’t playing an instrument…whatever (eye roll).

The Beach Boy collabo that everyone was dying to hear fell incredibly flat. I’ve never liked Adam Levine’s voice in anything other than his songs. His rendition of..geez, I can’t even remember the song…anyways it wasn’t great and it just didn’t work. Much worse was Foster the People. A great band with a very awkward lead singer, Mark Foster. Foster would sing with a dead pan face and pull away from the mic and just awkwardly smile: like one of those “ok time to smile now” smile. He was actually the only one who hit the notes in a Beach Boys-esque way. When the real Beach Boys came out, the performance definitely took another turn. It was definitely amazing.

Katy Perry’s performance was weird. At one point, I thought my TV broke. Not cool! Ya, I panicked and nearly peed myself. She looked like a Power Ranger. Bruno Mars performed really well. He brought back some James Brown which was amazing.

Taylor Swift did this barn yard thing which looked well really dirty…and not in that sexual kind of way.  I didn’t really care for it and I doubt she was actually playing that banjo but then again what do I know. The whole thing was just blah! I just don’t like country music so I might not be the best judge. Some other country singer  got a tribute but that was cute…when he was singing of course.

Adele was amazing (of course). She performed “Rolling in the Deep” with such fierceness. It’s like she was singing it to the guy who left her in the cold, but she sang it with so much confidence, it was amazing.

Bon Iver didn’t perform but they did get an award and that’s after they publicly dissed the Grammys. How dare they ask you to perform with another band. It’s blasphemy! (I’m being sarcastic). The acceptance speech was as awkward.

“Thank you to the nominees, and the non-nominees that have never been here and will never be here.”

What?! Just pick up the award and leave. If you really meant what you said about the Grammys, you wouldn’t have showed up.

Last but not least, the performance you surely heard about the next day at the water cooler. Nicki Minaj’s “Roman Revenge.” First and foremost, the only phrase that could even summarize that performance is: “What the f*ck??!!” She literally performed an exorcism.

You think ”Like a prayer” by Madonna was bad, that performance couldn’t compare.

I just posted the video without watching it. There’s only so much prayers I can do and I consider myself as a pretty passive catholic. Forget about the performance, the song sucks and she’s an artist riding on one CD and a bunch of collaborations. I’ve never hated Nicki Minaj, but I think this whole competition between artists of “who can be the craziest” has to stop.

Argh, yes…I’m agreeing with Grohl which totally makes me a hypocrite but this is my soapbox! It would be nice if these artists did sing from the heart rather than blind us with their “creativity.”

In the end, Adele swept the Grammys. She brought the mop, the broom and made sure her sucker ex-boyfriend rolled in the deep. Who said you couldn’t profit from a broken heart.  HAPPY VALENTINES DAY FOLKS!

For the first time in a long time, there’s been a shift in the way companies are marketing to men. Many marketers have told me in the past that they don’t specifically target ads to men…they target ads to please the women who will buy the products for men. It seems that women have veered off from the typical buff-alpha dog, to the chic-scrawny-yet-really-cool-guy-who-may-have-a-college-degree type. Just look at the bad press athletes have been getting (cough) Tiger Woods (cough)!  No, now we want the cool sophisticated guy who looks great and has an exquisite taste in clothes, drinks and even women.

Maybe Ciroc isn’t the best example to use. The brand in itself is made to appeal to “those” types of guys.

Let’s try a much more accessible brand: Gillette. I was reading an article on this very issue on mediabistro.com.

Gillette is getting tons of press for its new “brand ambassadors”: actor/musician André 3000, filmmaker and actor Gael García Bernal, and actor Adrien Brody. Brody was also in fancy imported beer Stella Artois’first Super Bowl ad last year, a departure from the usual Budweiser fare.

What caught our eye, besides that very sleek promo image of the three above, is how it veers away from Gillette’s usual spokespeople, which have included Tiger Woods and tennis star Roger Federer doing sports stuff.

Is it the next step in the mainstreaming of the metrosexual? Have men and the companies geared towards them evolved so that the gender line isn’t quite so clear any longer? Or is it that women are holding the purse strings more often now so the promotions have to appeal to female shoppers, even for men’s products?

I don’t really think women are changing advertising geared towards men. We don’t give men enough credit. I think most are really trying to step out of these overplayed alpha-male characters. Given the string of different types of advertisements “geared towards” men, I believe we are seeing a shift in gender “caricatures.”
